چکیده

Dear Editor, The enteral mode of nutrition delivery in the critically ill confers gastrointestinal, immunologic and survival advantages over parenteral nutrition (PN), especially when initiated early. Intensive care unit (ICU) patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) exhibit hypercatabolism, needing higher energy requirements. The focus of TBI management is cardiorespiratory resuscitation (CPR) and neuroprotective strategies, often resulting in the neglect of nutrition as an important physiologic requirement. A retrospective study was performed to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based proactive nutrition protocol in improving the nutrition of mechanically ventilated neurosurgical patients admitted to the neuroICU (NICU).

Validation of the Canadian clinical practice guidelines for nutrition support in mechanically ventilated, critically ill adult patients: results of a prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE Recently, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the provision of nutrition support in the critical care setting have been developed. To validate these guidelines, we hypothesized that intensive care units whose practice, on average, was more consistent with the guidelines would have greater success in providing enteral nutrition. DESIGN Prospective observational study. S...

Compare the Quality of Nursing Care Related to Enteral Nutrition with Standards in Patients at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Hospitals of Qazvin University of Medical Sciences

Background: Malnutrition is a common clinical problem in critically ill patient at  ICU. It has irreversible consequences for patients and causes heavy health care costs for the healthcare system. Nurses are the main responsible for providing nutritional care to patients, but studies show that nurses' compliance with standards in patient care is very low. Therefore, it is important to determine...

Implementation of enteral feeding protocol in an intensive care unit: Before-and-after study

AIM To determine the effects of implementing an enteral feeding protocol on the nutritional delivery and outcomes of intensive care patients. METHODS An uncontrolled, observational before-and-after study was performed in a tertiary mixed medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU). In 2013, a nurse-driven enteral feeding protocol was developed and implemented in the ICU. Nutrition and outcome-...

Exploring the Enteral Feeding Practices Used by Critical Care Nurses: A Dissertation

Mechanically ventilated critically ill patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) require enteral feedings to maintain adequate nutrition during critical illness. Delivery of adequate enteral nutrition is also critical to the recovery of critically ill patients. Enteral nutrition has been shown to decrease length of time on the ventilator, decrease length of stay and ICU and decrease mor...

Evaluation of delivery of enteral nutrition in mechanically ventilated Malaysian ICU patients

BACKGROUND There are numerous challenges in providing nutrition to the mechanically ventilated critically ill ICU patient. Understanding the level of nutritional support and the barriers to enteral feeding interruption in mechanically ventilated patients are important to maximise the nutritional benefits to the critically ill patients. Thus, this study aims to evaluate enteral nutrition deliver...
